  • Historic Jefferson Railway: 903-665-6400, 400 E. Austin St. Ride an 1870’s reproduction of the “Robert E. Lee” Engine #7 along the Big Cypress Bayou. You can view a Confederate Powder Magazine along the seven-mile tour as well as the historical ruins of the Clark and Boice Sawmill and the first iron foundry in East Texas.
  • Historic Oakwood Cemetery: E. Webster and N. Main Street. The tomb of Diamond Bessie 1877, “The Trial of the 19th Century”.
  • Jay Gould Private Rail Car: 903-665-2513, 210 W. Austin St. The “Atalanta” has a luxurious interior with four staterooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen butler’s pantry and bathroom. Ironically, the car is within a stone’s throw of the Excelsior Hotel, in whose register Gould wrote “The end of Jefferson”. Tours from the Excelsior House, 9:00, 12:00, 2:30 and 4:30. $1.00 Adults, Children 50 cents.
  • Jefferson Carnegie Library: 903-665-8911, 301 W. Lafayette St. Built in 1907, one of few such libraries still serving its original purpose.
  • Jefferson Ghost Walk: Corner of W. Austin and Vale St903-665-6289 or 903-445-6460, Saturdays evenings, or by appointment.  Go on an eerie walk through the historic district of Jefferson and visit known haunted sights, and hear the stories of their hauntings.

  •  Turning Basin Bayou Tours – 1001 Bayou St.,(off Polk) 903-665-2222. Located across the Polk St. Bridge from downtown. One hour narrated tour of Texas’ largest inland port. April through October at 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 & 4:00 seven days a week. (weather permitting). March-December 12:00 & 2:00.

  • Freeman Plantation: 22681 State Highway 49 West, 903-665-2320  The graceful Greek revival structure embodies the building style that distinguished so many Louisiana plantation homes. Tours by appointment.

  • Singletons Virginia Cross: 401 N. Soda St., 903-665-3938. Built in 1859, a Greek Revival home located in the older portion of Jefferson, close to the Jefferson Historic District, and an easy walk from downtown. Tours are conducted on selected Saturdays at 1:00 pm. Admission: $7.00
  • The Grove: 405 Moseley. 903-665-8018. Guided Tour through one of the historical – and haunted – homes from Jefferson’s past… Join us for an hour-long excursion into the historic old home that has been called “the most haunted house in Jefferson”. Usual Tour Times (but please call to confirm): Saturdays 2:00 PM, Sundays 11:00 AM. Admission: $6.00. No children under 8 years of age, please.

  • Caddo Lake State Park: 480 acres beside Caddo Lake; an area once occupied by Caddo Indians, a tribe quite advanced in civilization. Camping areas, trailer sites, cabins, fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, nature trails and interpretive center. West of town on F.M. 2198 on Caddo Lake.
  • Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge: one of more than 500 refuges throughout the United States. The purpose of the 7,500 acre Refuge is to manage, conserve and protect the migratory birds and other fish and wildlife that depend on it. The Refuge organization is an independent, non-profit, 501(c)3 group that: Promotes the conservation of the natural resources of the Refuge. Fosters public understanding and appreciation of the Refuge. Engages in activities that will assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in its mission to conserve fish, wildlife and their habitats.
  • Lions Park: Jefferson St. & Line St, – Picnic in the gazebo or picnic tables. There’s also a playground area with slides, monkey bars, swings and more. Also home of “The Enchanted Forest”, a Christmas Tree display.
